It has been a strange (and good ) day. It really started last night. I camped in an RV campground, which could have been ok,  but it was an adventure. I was given two different spots, but neither one had enough grass to put a tent on. So I ended up putting my tent in back of the shower/ bathroom/ laundry building. The real issue was noise from the highway next to the campground. It never went down. I finally gave up about 11:00 and took my sleeping pad and bag into the laundry room, shut the door, turned off the lights and got a few hours of sleep.
The morning was foggy again, so I ended up sneaking up on some deer crossing the road. Hilly again. I had to walk the bike up a few hills. They were relentless.  Total mileage today was 65 miles. We ended up in Houston, Missouri. It was beautiful - very green. Loads of trees, and beautiful valleys. Ran into 4 riders going the other way. The first one was a 20ish guy from Belgium. Then when I was becoming discouraged I ran into three Americans. They could have been from the same family, but ended up being just friends. One was 20ish, one 40 ish, and one 60 ish. It was good to see another goldy oldy on the road. They had some good advice for down the road. All of the riders mentioned the roaming dogs in Kentucky. I have two canisters of pepper spray ready to go. I get chased daily here, but it hasn't been too bad yet. Talking with the other riders picked me up when I had doubts about making it today.  20 miles from the end, I was really flagging. I stopped into a small grocery store. It was just the ticket. There was a whole family there - a mom, 4 kids, and 2 grandparents. They were really welcoming. The kids were all anxious to show me their baby turtles. The adults were encouraging, and helped me to realize I could make it after all . Food, drink, and rest helped as well. The overriding issue today was humidity. I was just too dense to realize it until the end of the ride.
 Road kill report - 4 possums, 1 turtle, 1 snake, 1 deer, 1 rabbit.
Wildlife report - the previously mentioned deer in the fog, several rabbits, and 8 or 9 turtles. I found out that it doesn't hurt the turtles to move them.
About 4 o'clock the sky really opened up. Winds and violent rain. I was lucky enough to be inside at the time. We are expecting some unstable weather tomorrow. We"ll have to keep our eye out tomorrow. For an exhausting day, and one with lots of ups and downs, it was a good day. Til next time.

  1. You should have asked me...I used to have a turtle. They like being moved. But don't ever put them on a fence post. They don't like that.
